NSC on the move towards 2028
Administration
The NSC's Freddy Mwiya this week shared some of his views on the daily Sport Wrap Show.
Namibia Sports Commission chief administrator Freddy Mwiya says the commission is planning to continue improving sports in general in the country.Speaking on the daily Sport Wrap Show, Mwiya expressed excitement towards 2025 given the number of events Namibia aims to host.
“We started with all the plans from last year and we started implementing some of the plans already for this year.
“Most important part that we did this year was to bring together all the Federations’ presidents and secretary-generals,” Mwiya said.
Mwiya says sport federations currently have two centres of power, with one providing official duties, and another managing the day-to-day affairs of the sport.
“Now we are going to actually have what we call a General Assembly, where we invite the majority of all our sports codes on 22 February.
“This year, we are looking at many projects of sport activities that we are going to implement and ensure that they are successful.”
As Namibia prepares to host the Region Five Games later this year, Mwiya is confident in the country’s ability to successfully host the event.
Project Olympics
The Sports Commission chief administrator says the country has its aim set on the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA.
He hopes the country will be able to bring more medals and that is why he deems important to start the preparations as early as possible.
“We are working on what we call the Triple P, what we call the Quality of Performance Program.
“We are going to embark upon some training with coaches on sport development programs, athlete’s pathway programs, so that by the end of the day, we can have a group of elite athletes that we need to spend much money on,” he added.
Mwiya further calls upon the corporate world to invest in Namibian sports.
He believes the country will be able to achieve more in the sport fraternity if all can join hands and work towards a common goal.
“I really call upon our brothers and sisters, especially in the corporate world, that we need to formulate a strong partnership.
“Partnering with our federations, that's the only way we can grow sport and that's the only way we can also grow your brand.”
