In a thrilling display of talent and sportsmanship, Windhoek Golf Club last weekend hosted the highly anticipated annual Sunita Cables Matchplay finals alongside an Individual Stableford (ISF) competition.

Sponsored by Sunita Cables, the event attracted a total of 35 golfers, battling it out for top honours.

Matchplay Finals results

The weekend featured intense competition in both the Singles and Doubles Matchplay categories.

In the Singles Matchplay final, Bertus Damon emerged victorious over Elton Freyer with a decisive four-hole lead with only three holes left to play, securing his win early.

Reflecting on the strategic highlights that led to his win, Damon said he gained the advantage by making a birdie on hole three. “I reached the green in one shot and sank the putt,” he said.

“By hole number four, I went two up, making par while my opponent struggled with a double bogey. On the back nine, we played until hole 14, where another par pushed me three up. At that point, I could sense his fighting spirit fading, and we called the game on hole 15,” explained Damon.

He added that the competition marked his fourth Matchplay final in the last five years, and clinching this year’s overall title marks his third singles victory. “It’s a great way to end the year on a positive note, especially since I won’t be competing again until 2025,” he noted.

In the Doubles Matchplay final, Raymond van Zyl and Danie van der Merwe secured a close victory, finishing two holes ahead at the 18th hole against the team of Dewald Coetzee and Leon Lochner.

Individual Stableford standings

Sunita Cables’ ISF competition also saw outstanding performances across the leaderboard.

John Williams claimed first place with dominant 40 points, edging out Monty Rukoro, who also scored 40 points but took second place on countout.

Reflecting on the final round that led him to victory, Williams acknowledged hole 14 being the most pivotal.

“My second shot hit the pin and stopped just a foot from the hole, allowing me to sink a birdie and earn four points. This felt especially rewarding after a disastrous 13th hole where I scored no points,” he said.

While Williams acknowledged that winning “is an incredible honour and receiving prizes a wonderful bonus”, they are secondary to his primary motivation – the love of the game and the camaraderie it fosters.

“I’m especially grateful to companies like Sunita Cables for their sponsorship of these tournaments. Their support significantly contributes to the growth of the sport,” he noted.

Willem Triegaardt rounded out the Individual Staleford’s top three with a solid 38 points.

Upcoming competition

Windhoek Golf Club’s next major event is the club championships sponsored by Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC), scheduled for this weekend.

The club management extended its gratitude to Sunita Cables for its continued support, citing it as instrumental in fostering a vibrant golfing community, in a press release issued on Monday.
