Netball Namibia yesterday announced that the MTC Netball Premier League will return for its fifth season on 10 May, with 12 teams set to compete.

The announcement was made by secretary general Sofia Simon at a press conference in Windhoek, where New Era also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to become the league's official media partner.

Last season’s title was claimed by Namibia Correctional Service (NCS), who secured their second league championship in three years in Otjiwarongo last September. The Namibian Navy finished as runners-up, with Mighty Gunners taking third and Wanderers placing fourth.

The upcoming season will see the debut of Cuca Tops from the Kavango East Region and Extreme Netball from the Oshana Region. The latter became the first team from that region to compete in the country’s top-tier netball league.

The newly promoted clubs replace the bottom two teams from last season’s standings, Tsumeb Netball and Young Stars from the Omusati Region, who have been relegated.

Speaking at the event, vice president Conny Samaria reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to creating employment opportunities for local netball players through club involvement.

“[As outlined] in the association’s third pillar of performance excellence, our goal is to improve and strengthen team preparation and participation. We may not yet be at the level we envision, but the small monthly stipend a player, coach or team manager receives from their club already makes a difference,” said Samaria.

“It empowers them to stay active in club competitions and contributes significantly to job creation, especially for our youth. The league has also paved the way for players to gain employment in sectors like the police and defence forces. This is about using your talent to build a livelihood. This is the vision of Netball Namibia.”
