The Central Volleyball Association (CVA) League’s second weekend of matches saw Namibia Defence Force (NDF) Hurricanes dominate with straight-set victories at the Unam Gym Hall in Windhoek last weekend.

The NDF Hurricanes first beat Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) Blazers 3-0 before powering past the Afrocat D team with another 3-0 win in their final match of the weekend.

Speaking to Network Sport Hub (NSH), team captain Immanuel Leopold credited their strong start to the season to hard work during training.

“These wins reflect our [dedication] in training, where we focused on sharpening our serves, blocks, attacks and team coordination. We are excited to build on this momentum,” he said.

Boosted commitment

He said the team’s commitment was boosted by their recent participation in the Bank Windhoek Doc Tournament in Swakopmund, where they faced a tough “group of death”.

“Our team was knocked out in the group stage by two of the country’s top teams [Nampol and NDF Raptors], but we used that experience to regroup and refocus.

“The intensity of those matches pushed us to elevate our game, and I believe our unity and determination really showed through in these early league fixtures.

"Every player stepped up, and we maintained consistent pressure to secure those clean wins. We’re grateful for the support from our fans and are hungry to keep improving as the season progresses,” Leopold said.

• In the womens’ division, experienced side City of Windhoek produced a dominant 3-0 win over debutants Afrocat Titans.

In his post-match comments, City of Windhoek coach Leonard Shimuketa acknowledged the efforts of their youthful opponents. “We played a very youthful, competitive team. They played very well, and their performance just goes to show how bright the future of volleyball is,” he said.

‘Our opponents are not weak’

Team captain Julia Hekandj also praised Afrocat Titans for their fighting spirit.

“Our opponents were not weak, so it was pretty interesting to play against them. They have really good talent, but our team was dedicated [and that was the difference], as it paid off,” she said.

Reflecting on the loss, Afrocat Titans coach Aloisius Ishitile expressed pride in the young team and believes it will continue to improve.

“We took most of these players from the under-13 and U14 categories. The first game in the league is always difficult. I am confident we have room for improvement. Our second game will not be like the first one,” he assured.

Afrocat Titans captain Ndalinoshisho Vilho attributed the loss to a lack of confidence among her players.

“I feel like our players [are a little intimidated by the older players]. They have fear of playing with the ball [and bringing their A-game to the fore like they do in training].

“[Nonetheless], we are looking forward to improving and doing better,” she said.

Another straight-set win in the ladies’ division saw NUST beating Unam Queens B 3-0.

In the men’s division, Unam Kings defeated Afrocat E 3-1, while Afrocat D secured the club’s only win of the weekend with a 3-1 victory over debutants Training Establishment Volleyball Club (TEVC).
