Madelaine, Orren win first dominoes tourney

Team Sliminoes, comprising Madelaine van Wyk and William Orren, reigned supreme at The Benevolent Club’s inaugural Domino Tournament, recently held at The Coffee Tree Restaurant in Windhoek.

The competition featured 12 teams from Usakos, Rehoboth and Windhoek, battling it out in pool stages, with the top teams advancing to the knockout rounds and grand finale. Bringing the community together and raising awareness about the coffee shop, the event was a day filled with fun, food and fellowship.

Event organiser Dennis Fredericks lauded the players for their exceptional skill, strategy and sportsmanship throughout the event. “Their spirited performances reminded us why dominoes hold such a special place in Namibian culture,” he remarked.



Spoils of victory

Champions Van Wyk and Orren won a floating trophy, accompanied by gold medals, a N$6 000 voucher from Gondwana Collection Namibia and a N$2 500 cash prize. Reflecting on being crowned the first domino champions, The Sliminoes expressed honour. “As fairly young players, it gave us a sense of great accomplishment. We are humbled to have played against such great people, and even greater competitors,” the Sliminoes team members said.

The Windhoek-based team extended their gratitude to the event organisers for a well-planned competition. “The organisers were all very supportive and motivating, which made the much-needed event memorable and a truly extraordinary experience,” they added. Van Wyk and Orren also talked about their deep connection to the game, underscoring family traditions and meaningful relationships. Van Wyk grew up in a family that considers dominoes the go-to choice for game nights. “Playing dominoes is very significant to me because it brings people from all walks of life together. Anyone who can count to 12 can make friends in the dominoes community,” he said. Orren added: “Playing dominoes is about building friendships and honing strategies that can have a lasting impact. Sometimes even leading to moments as incredible as winning the first dominoes tournament.”



Runners-up recognised

Competition runners-up were Omar Dedericks and Marvin Jacobs of The Last Ones team, who received silver medals and a N$2000 cash prize.

In third place was team Die Skim’s Abraham “Cupi” Cupido and Allics Petersen, receiving bronze medals and a N$1000 cash prize. Team R.Y.P Usakos was placed fourth in the competition and received a DStv decoder, sponsored by MultiChoice Namibia. The other teams that participated are R.Y.P1 Rehoboth, R.Y.P2 Rehoboth, The Rangers (Usakos), POS 3 Kings (Usakos), Team KO (Windhoek), The Rockets (Windhoek), The Bomb Squad (Windhoek) and the Night Crawlers (Windhoek).
