Afrocat Volleyball Club hosted the Brimstone Medical Services King and Queen of the Court beach volleyball tournament at A. Shipena Secondary School in Windhoek last weekend.

The competition, named in recognition of Brimstone Medical Services’ longstanding support of Afrocat Volleyball Club, saw 40 participants from across Windhoek compete for top honours, medals and prize money.

Male Open winners

In the Male Open category, Messah Kambala and Tomas Shivute emerged victorious to get gold medals, followed by Panashe Chiguta and Mahatchi Kudakwashe in second place to get silver medals, ahead of Teofelus Shayuka and Simeon Ndaxula as bronze medallists.

Kambala described the winning feeling as incredible, stating he is “absolutely thrilled and overjoyed to have dominated the overall competition.”

“I thank my partner [Tomas Shivute] for his hard work and effort, which led us to victory. The event was well-organised and I look forward to coming back and defending our title,” he assured.

His partner, Shivute, also attributed their victory to successful collaboration. “The competition was intense, with each match involving quick decision-making, precise coordination and adaptability to opponent tactics,” he said.

Female Open winners

The Female Open saw Lea Nangombe and Meameno Heita claim the top spot, ahead of Claudia Reiter and Soini Shipefi (second) and Naemi Amunyera and Linda Nehaus (third).

Nangombe said coming away with the victory against numerous experienced opponents feels amazing, and a testament that their hard work has paid off. “It encourages you to want to win more awards,” she noted.

Her partner, Heita, said she still relives every moment, emotion and effort that they have put into the competition. “We really pushed ourselves to our highest limits and played our hearts out. Most importantly, we had fun competing in the event. I feel happy, grateful and fulfilled.”

Other results

In the 2-a-side social category, Simeon Ndaxula and Linea Shapange took first place, beating Onny Gideon and Sam Shishiveni (second) and Matheus Mupupa and Andreas Kary (third).

The 4-a-side social competition was dominated by Team Betterdays, leaving Okapandja to secure second place with Es Bwebwe in third.

Tournament organiser and Afrocat’s head coach, Ishitile Aloisius, expressed satisfaction with the event’s great success. “It is all thanks to the generous sponsorship from Brimstone Medical Services, especially Dr Sylvi Kapundja. Afrocat’s next beach volleyball event will be the Beach Volleyball League, scheduled for October,” he noted.

Afrocat Sports Club's Khomas regional chairperson, Joseph Haufila, emphasised the importance of youth participation in sports and commended participants and attendees at the competition for contributing to the event’s success.
