Endombo hosts final Grootfontein community sports tournament
Multi-sport tournament
Grootfontein-based Endombo Financial Services will host the third and final edition of its popular community sports tournament, Giving Back to the Community, from 18 to 21 April 2025 at Omulunga Stadium. The event will feature five sport codes, including football, netball, volleyball, athletics, and tug of war, with a total budget of N$300,000.The tournament, which has grown in scope and popularity since its inception in 2023, is free to enter for both participants and spectators. It remains focused on uplifting the local Grootfontein community, with all competing teams and athletes drawn exclusively from the district.
“This will be the last one for Grootfontein district residents,” said Angel Shetukana, a member of the organising committee. “From this one, we are aiming to do a bigger event that will be national. So people from Katima, Windhoek and elsewhere can wait for the next one. Hopefully, the budget will increase to half a million, since it will no longer be limited to Grootfontein alone.”
She added that the event is inclusive, catering to people of all ages. “Netball, volleyball, football – any age. Kids can come and play. The only restriction is in athletics: the 400 metres is for boys and girls aged 16 to 21, while the relay category is for those aged 22 and up.”
Shetukana emphasised the developmental role the tournament has played over the years. “We’ve really groomed a lot of kids. We've brought out the potential in many young athletes, and we know of two or three who went on to the nationals just through the Endombo Fun Tournament.”
Diana Yetamunwa, a representative from Endombo Financial Services, said the event also provides an economic boost to local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and informal vendors.
“We’ve been offering the stalls at the event for free. Vendors just need to bring their stock and start selling. They don’t have to pay for stall numbers or anything like that. It’s been very productive because many people have managed to make profits during the event,” Yetamunwa said.
The competition will feature significant prize money across the five sport codes, including N$50,000 for football, N$30,000 for netball, N$15,000 for volleyball, N$10,000 for tug of war, and N$42,000 in athletics categories.
With free entrance, free registration, and entertainment including food, drinks and music, the Easter Weekend Fun Tournament promises a festive atmosphere and a memorable send-off for what has become a celebrated tradition in Grootfontein.
