Helalia takes third spot in Cape Town

Namibia’s marathon queen Helalia Johannes finished third overall at the last Spar Gran Prix series in a time of 32:21.

The race was won by Ethiopia's Tadu Nare, who clocked 31:53, followed by Selam Gebre in a time of 32:18.

Johannes' coach Robert Kaxuxwena said he was pleased with the result, especially during this time of the season.

“I am really happy with the result because she outdid herself in this race knowing she has not had a decent rest.

“I was not expecting her to be part of the podium finishers and that is why I am happy as a coach that she performed that well,” he said.

Johannes was part of the leading group throughout the race and proved why she is one of Africa’s best.

Rival Nare has, however, pushed her to the limit, with youngster Gebre also giving the veteran enough competition throughout the season.

“I feel that it is time to rest for her because it has been a busy year and she pushed herself to the limits," the coach said, adding that they will get back to training early next year.
