Johnson triumphs in junior golf season finale

Walvis Bay Golf Club's Kyle Johnson was crowned champion of the Rossmund Junior Cup, held at the club last weekend.

The event marked the Namibia Junior Golf Federation’s season finale, featuring thrilling showdowns from 12 golfers across Divisions A to E. It concluded a season that began at Omeya Golf Club in January.

Reflecting on his achievement, Johnson said the victory was crucial in improving his World Amateur Golf Ranking, especially after returning to the course following a short break.

“For someone who has been away from the sport for two weeks on vacation with my family, coming back to win right after that break is a huge achievement. It felt great to be back on the course having fun again!” he remarked.

Crucial moment for victory

Highlighting one of the crucial moments that proved decisive in securing the overall title, Johnson underscored hole number four, a 290-meter par 4. “I hit a great drive that carried just past the green. I almost made an eagle but ended up with a birdie instead. That was definitely the best hole for me,” he recalled.

Johnson also encouraged fellow young golfers to stay focused and dedicated. “It’s not about the number of hours you spend on the course, but the quality of practice that counts,” he noted.

The competition also saw standout performances across several divisions, with Justin Naobeb walking away as the overall nett winner and Charles Lohmann taking the runner-up gross title.

Johnson's clubmates Weitz van Niekerk and Mathias Nel took home the Division C and Division D titles, respectively, alongside Rossmund Golf Club's Jo-Ann Auseb, who walked away with the Division E title.

Event organiser Jessica van Schalkwyk extended her congratulations to all the golfers, noting the outstanding sportsmanship and camaraderie throughout the event. “The level of Namibian junior golf is improving in leaps and bounds,” she remarked.

Van Schalkwyk also announced the launch of the NamKids Golf Programme next year, a new initiative aimed at promoting junior golf in Namibia.
