Khomas U17 team’s success in China highlights new partnerships

The Khomas under-17 football team was officially welcomed back on Wednesday night by the regional governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua, celebrating their impressive second-place finish on debut at the recent Yanzhou China Grand Canal Cities men’s elite youth tournament in Jiangsu Province, China.

Speaking at their reception held at the Khomas Regional Office, coach Risto Shikomba highlighted their dedication and hard work, indicating that the team gave its all, despite missing out on the overall title with a 5-1 loss against the Jiangsu Province team.

“It was not easy for us to get here. The team gave everything to win the second-place award. We were honoured that both the star player and top goal-scorer awards were given to Vitario ‘Namab’ Brunzel.

“The tournament was more than just football – it was a platform for our boys to grow and learn. They had the chance to interact with players from other countries, building friendships and engaging in meaningful social exchanges,” he noted.



‘Best team ever’

Team captain Martino Selwyn Kauzuu acknowledged that being part of the competition was not easy, praising the team he captained as the best he has ever been part of.

“We went to China with a mission, and we gave it our all, even managing to beat a strong Korean team and holding our own against the host city in a tough match that ended in a draw,” he remarked.

“Despite the challenges, we came out as group winners. The final was intense, we had to repeat the Jiangsu Province team having every advantage [and ultimately winning 5-1]. But I’m certain they felt our presence on the field.

“This trip was truly a dream come true for all of us,” Kauzuu added.



Pride, gratitude, partnerships

Officially welcoming the team, Khomas governor McLeod-Katjirua expressed pride and gratitude, acknowledging their hard work and dedication in the tournament. She also lauded the support from families, schools and officials.

McLeod-Katjirua extended special thanks to the sports ministry and the Chinese Embassy in Namibia for fostering the exchange opportunity. She also praised the team for upholding the Khomas-Jiangsu partnership and representing the region with patriotism and commitment.

“My unwavering wish remains that this tournament will open doors to positive developments, including school-to-school training partnerships, sports development scholarships, educational scholarships and study opportunities for students and teachers alike.

“I hope it fosters regular sports exchange programs for coaches and sports administrators, supports the development of sports clinics and youth football academies, and advances youth football careers,” she said.
