Afrocat Sports Club will host its first Spike for Girls volleyball tournament at Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS) this weekend.

The event, which will kick off at 09:00 on Saturday and is expected to conclude around 11:00 on Sunday, is a proven highlight on Afrocat’s calendar, featuring girls in the under-16 and U20 categories.

It is sponsored by OTB Sport Namibia, which will provide trophies and medals for winners and runner-up teams.

Organiser Aloisius Ishitile said the tournament is part of Afrocat’s initiatives to grow women’s sports, with a particular focus on volleyball.

“Opportunities like these are rare in female sports. The level of competition and the environment where the games will be held will provide invaluable experience for the players,” he said.

First national competition

Regarding his expectations of the competition, he expressed his excitement, noting that the enthusiasm and commitment of the participating teams have been especially rewarding for a tournament that has been in the planning stages for some time.

He said the preparations for the tournament, which include the venue and accommodation for the visiting ATS Volleyball teams from Zimbabwe, competing in both categories, are in the final stages.

He added that players are more than ready to give their best performances, as the event marks the first time most are competing at a national level.

“The tournament will feature Namibian players from Titans Volleyball Club, Lions Volleyball Club, Academia Secondary School, Delta High School, DHPS, Sunshine Private School and Afrocat,” he said.

Ishitile pointed out that the tournament is free to attend, underscoring Afrocat’s commitment to providing opportunities for players to compete, gain exposure and develop their skills.

The event is not just a competition, but a celebration of young talent and a platform to inspire future stars in Namibian volleyball, he said. “The audience can expect to witness some of the best volleyball yet. Come enjoy a weekend of competitive volleyball!”
