Cricket Namibia will host a press conference next week to announce the next head coach of the national men’s cricket team, the Eagles.

Following the resignation of Pierre de Bruyn after six years of steering Namibia on the international stage, his replacement will be announced next Tuesday (6 May) at the Namibia Cricket Ground.

The 48-year-old De Bruyn has made the difficult decision to step down from his position in order to be closer to his family and has accepted a new role with the Titans franchise in Centurion, South Africa.

The former Titans all-rounder has recently been under increasing pressure due to the Eagles’ slump in form since the international retirement of David Wiese last year. In the one-day format, Namibia is currently placed sixth out of the eight teams in the ICC World Cup League Two (2024-2026) which is a step in the qualification pathway to the 2027 ICC World Cup, of which Namibia will be a co-host.

Nevertheless, his contribution to Namibian cricket has been nothing short of transformational.

Since joining Cricket Namibia in 2018, he has led the Eagles through probably the most successful era in the history of the sport in the country.

T20 World Cup milestones

Under his mentorship, Namibia achieved ODI status in 2019, a milestone that elevated the team onto the global stage and opened the doors to greater opportunities and recognition.

His tenure was further marked by Namibia’s historic qualification for three ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournaments – in UAE 2021, Australia 2022, and West Indies 2024. The Eagles even progressed to the Super 12 phase of their debut tournament.

These achievements have not only lifted the profile of Namibian cricket internationally, but have also inspired a new generation of players and fans across the nation.

The team’s accolades under De Bruyn further include four ICC Associate Member Men's Performance of the Year awards – testament to the team’s extraordinary rise.

His passion, discipline and commitment to excellence established a culture of professionalism and belief within the Eagles squad. Beyond the results on the field, he helped shape the values and mindset of a team that now competes with confidence and pride against the world’s best.

“We are immensely grateful to Pierre for his vision, leadership, and the legacy he leaves behind,” said Johan Muller, CEO of Cricket Namibia.

“His impact will be felt for years to come, and while we are sad to see him go, we respect and support his decision to prioritise his family and pursue a new chapter in his career.”

Leaving with gratitude

Reflecting on his departure, Pierre de Bruyn shared: “This decision has been one of the hardest I’ve ever made. Stepping away after six years isn’t easy, but my heart is telling me it’s time to focus on the people who matter most – my family.

“I’ve poured so much of myself into this role, and it’s been an unforgettable journey filled with growth, connection, and purpose.

“Now, I’m ready to turn the page and begin a new chapter – one that allows me to be more present at home and embrace what life has in store.

“I leave with deep gratitude and love for everyone who’s been part of this story. I’m incredibly grateful for the support, friendship, and opportunities I’ve experienced here.”

Cricket Namibia said it will begin the process of appointing a new head coach in due course. In the meantime, preparations for upcoming fixtures will continue under the guidance of the current coaching and support staff.

Cricket Namibia extends its heartfelt thanks to Pierre de Bruyn for his extraordinary service and wishes him every success in his new role with the Titans.
