The Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) in partnership with the Coastal Chess Association (CCA) will host the Bank Windhoek Namibia National Schools Teams championships in Swakopmund on Saturday 30 September.

The format will be a Swiss System tournament, played over seven rounds.

The first-place winners in the secondary and primary school sections will each walk away with N$2 000.

The runners-up will take home N$1 500, while the third-places finisher earns N$1 000.

In the academy section, the top three will win N$1500, N$1 000 and N$500.

The CCA’s media officer, Rochelle Petrus, said the event serves as a great opportunity for schools to bring their chess players together to compete and walk away with amazing prizes.

Petrus says many life lessons can be learned from a simple game of chess.

“Some chess basics – such as, a touch counts as a move – teach you that in life you cannot undo your actions and you have to face the consequences. The lesson is, to think before you act.

“You need to be prepared for any kind of reaction. The game teaches you to think ahead. You couldn’t imagine the changes in the behaviours of some children when they sit down for a game of chess.”

Uniting schools

Petrus encouraged all schools and academies to participate in events like this one.

“Not only is there an opportunity to win some great prizes, but also an opportunity to learn, grow and build new relationships among schools – uniting for a common cause. Let’s make chess big together,” she encouraged.
