'Special One' clinches WBO Africa title with knockout
Boxing
Flame Nangolo claimed continental glory with a knockout, while Kautondokwa, Simon Jr and Shinima added dominating wins.
Flame “Special One” Nangolo delivered a breathtaking third-round knockout against Ghana’s Felix Ajom to capture the WBO Africa super featherweight title at the AC Boxing Bonanza in Windhoek. The victory enhances Nangolo’s status in the boxing world, extending his unbeaten professional record to 13-0 (5 KOs) and opening a pathway to possible world title contention.
Ajom, who entered with a formidable record of 20 wins (17 KOs) and two losses by decision, had never been knocked out before. Additionally, he had been on a dominant nine-fight winning streak since February 2019.
However, the 23-year-old Nangolo’s relentless attack and precision power-punching ensured an emphatic end to that run. A left hook to the chin and right hook to the head stunned the Ghanaian as he sank to his knees and was counted out.
Nangolo overcame the predictions based on his relatively low knockout percentage and passed by far the biggest challenge of his career.
Speaking after the fight, the new African champion expressed his joy and confidence for the future. “I'm happy with the title – there is more to come! I am just getting started.”
Kautondokwa dominates in long-awaited return
Former WBO middleweight world title contender Walter "The Executioner" Kautondokwa made a statement in his return to professional boxing after a 65-month hiatus.
The Namibian fighter secured a first-round TKO victory over Zimbabwe’s Liberty Muwani, sending his opponent to the canvas twice with powerful aggression, before Muwani indicated he does not want to continue.
Kautondokwa, who stepped up to light heavyweight (79.15 kg) for this bout, proved he still possesses the devastating power that has defined his career.
His record now stands at 19-2 (18 KOs), with both of his defeats coming in international bouts against Demetrius Andrade (USA) in 2018 and Kanat Islam (Kazakhstan) in 2019.
Simon Jr, Shinima in convincing wins
Namibian welterweight Harry Simon Junior showcased his finishing instincts by securing a second-round TKO victory over Zimbabwe’s Tranos Zihove.
Simon’s unbeaten record extends to 23 wins and one draw. The young prospect continues to establish himself as a rising force in the division.
Earlier, his fellow welterweight Charles Shinima rebounded from his recent split-decision loss against South Africa’s Brandon Thysse in Gauteng with an emphatic third-round TKO against Dickson Said of Malawi. Shinima’s record improves to 19-2 (13 KOs) as he puts himself back in contention for bigger opportunities.
