Abed Shikongo expressed great joy after becoming the new WBA Pan-Africa welterweight champion and maintaining his unbeaten record late Saturday night.

The MTC Salute Boxing Academy fighter stopped previously unbeaten Alfeus Shaanika (MTC Nestor Tobias Sunshine Boxing Academy) in the sixth round to claim the prestigious continental title at the Roman Catholic Hospital Hall in Windhoek.

“I want to thank everyone that came in their numbers to support and I am proud of what I have achieved.

“I am sorry to disappoint the Shaanika fans, because they thought they were going to win this one.

“They must come watch me again because I will deliver more big wins in the future,” Shikongo said.

The two fighters immediately started off their scheduled 12-round title fight exchanging serious blows.

Shaanika defended with his back against the ropes in most of the early rounds, with Shikongo’s punching power proving to give him the edge.

Shikongo dropped Shaanika and followed up with more devastating blows which resulted in the referee stopping the fight.

The boxer from Salute extended his unbeaten professional record to 10 wins and recorded his fifth knockout victory. The lanky Shaanika, nicknamed Mosquito, dropped to 8-1 (3 KOs).

Salute Academy’s promoter Kiriata Kamanya lauded his boxer for delivering the win.

“This was a great one and I am proud that we have managed to gain this title.

“I set up a fight of such nature because I wanted the title to remain in Namibia.

“I would like to thank our main sponsor MTC and everyone that played a part in making this fight possible,” Kamanya said.
