Arrows to fly at new range

Namibia’s national target archery outdoor championship is set to take place this Saturday at the Windhoek Archery Club’s new range at Yellowstone Trails in Babs Street, Avis.

The facility’s first competition will see international competition, with the participation of three South African archers to battle it out with 21 Namibians in the WA 720 and elimination stages.

The Archery Association of Namibia (AAN) vice-president Jacqueline Coetzee expressed her excitement about the opening.

“Spirits are high to set great scores on our new range. The opening event at Yellowstone is a testament to our dedication to advancing archery in Windhoek and providing a top-notch facility for archers to hone their skills," she said.

The day's activities will commence with registration and bow inspection at 07:00, followed by a practice round at 08:00. The scoring arrows segment will begin at 08:30, featuring 72 arrows shot over 12 rounds of six arrows each. This will be followed by the elimination round to determine the winners in each class.

The competition will feature a wide range of divisions, including compound women, compound women open (para-archer), compound women masters 50, compound men masters 50 , compound men, compound junior men, compound junior women, barebow recurve men and the compound under 13 boys category.

Namibian archers such as two-time world champion Jannie Meuwesen, Louan Groenewald, Wessie Wessels, AJ Groenewald, Christian Louw, Eugene Thuynsma, Marinus Kruger, Stephan Meyer and De Villiers Visser will be chasing top honours, alongside Johann Viljoen and Amanda Viljoen from South Africa.

Some notable women’s competitors include Namibian archers Babette Taljaard, Ilana Malan, Jacqueline Coetzee and then Lizl Kuschke and Tanja du Plessis from South Africa.
